Ayrshire and Arran have a rich history and heritage, and both have had an influence far beyond their own boundaries over the centuries.

Woven into the area’s past are the lives of King’s; William Wallace had his roots here and Robert the Bruce, perhaps Scotland’s most celebrated of Kings, was born at Turnberry. Yes, it’s true – there was indeed life at Turnberry before it’s famous golf course!

Every age has left it’s mark; Arran’s stoneage standing stones, so old their history is mixed with legend; the Medieval castles on Arran and mainland Ayrshire; the elegant country houses and estates of the 18th & 19th centuries and the echoes of the industrial revolution all remain in some shape or form today.

Scotland AirportIn addition, some of the most innovative visitor attractions carry you back in time to the years of the Vikings, and bring you bang up to date in the futuristic Big Ideas Visitors Centre.

And of course, who could forget, that Ayrshire is the home to Robert Burns, our National poet. The Burns National Heritage Park and Tam o’ Shanter Experience in historic Alloway is home to Burns Cottage, the birthplace of the National Bard. The Visitors centre provides a unique insight into one of the most popular poets. Not to be missed.

For those of you who enjoy the occasional flutter, Ayrshire is home to Scotland’s Premier racecourse at Ayr, hosting both Flat and National Hunt Fixtures. Normally holding at least 26 days racing every year, Ayr is host to the Scottish Grand National, The Ayr Gold Cup, The Scottish Derby and a host of other valuable races during it’s 12 month racing programme.

Here at the North beach, we would be happy to assist you in co-ordinating day trips, just let us know where you’d like to visit and we will take care of it.
